summer shows + RIP treehouse.

it's been a quiet year for us so far. we've been busy dealing with boring things like school, work, poverty, and other things like that. life is long and short and difficult. in spite of it all, we have some shows coming up.

2023, outside the casbah.

of particular note: our best friends in treehouse of horror are calling it quits early next month. we'll miss this band very, very much, and we can't overstate how important they've been to our lives these past few years. they're ripping one last time with many of our dearest friends and some very cool surprise guests. jazz is out of town so we're moving as a 3-piece once again for this (as well as our gig at saint stephen's later this month) and planning to play mostly old stuff. we'd love to see you there.

as well, we'd like to thank everybody that attended stand & stare back in march; it was an beautiful night, and kai is aiming to put it together again next year. thank you especially to life & heaven through violence for making the trek up from the states, computer science & eric spinelli for driving all the way from montréal, alex & sonia for doing an amazing job on sound, and saint stephen's for having us. the more screamo we have in this cruel, cruel city, the better.

upcoming shows:
  • june 27th @ church of saint stephen-in-the-fields (tkaronto) w/ real friend (AB), farron keep, no purpose & kahraba (doors @ 7:30 p.m./music @ 8 p.m./all ages/$20/p.w.y.c.)—buy tickets here
  • july 3rd @ tranzac (tkaronto) w/ secret band, treehouse of horror (LAST SHOW), underwater basket weaving & body nest (doors @ 7 p.m./music @ 7:30 p.m./all ages/$25/p.w.y.c.)—buy tickets here
  • august 2nd @ lithuanian house (tkaronto) for new friends fest, night 3/3 w/ portraits of past, tomb mold, joliette, clay birds, commitment, quiet fear, poetry of torch, gros enfant mort, underwater basket weaving & coup d'état (5 p.m./all ages)—buy tickets here
  • september 17th @ bovine sex club (tkaronto) w/ the hirs collective & dear evangeline (19+/$20 adv./n.o.t.a.f.l.o.f.)—buy tickets here

summer update + next shows.

sorry about the lack of posts lately—everyone is very busy these days.

flyer by kai.

we played a very fun show with a bunch of friends last weekend that we only posted about in the sidebar here (whoops). we're working on something with our wits that you'll hear about down the line. as well, to the guy that tried to buy a shirt from us: we found some more smalls & mediums. :)

the benefit show in kitchener went on as planned at emmanuel united church and raised a bunch of money. thanks to our dear friend willa of public seating diy & body nest fame for organizing an amazing night, and thanks to everyone who came out to support. <3 <3 <3

flyer by kai.

some sad news to share: the caution children had to drop off the NFF pre-show that we're playing this week. we're all very gutted, but folk heroes alaskan have kindly stepped up to replace them. this one's gonna be a rager—we highly recommend attending. tickets can be bought here.

our schedule for the rest of the year:
  • july 31st @ collective arts (tkaronto) w/ alaskan, and always & treehouse of horror (6:30 p.m./19+/$15 with NFF '25 ticket, $25 without)—buy tickets
  • august 19th @ the study room (kitchener) w/ emma goldman (details t.b.a.)
  • september 11th @ ??? (tkaronto) w/ ??? (details t.b.a.)
  • october 31 @ ??? (tkaronto) (details t.b.a.)
  • november 1 @ ??? (details t.b.a.)
  • november 2 @ ??? (kitchener) (details t.b.a.)

spirit desire (kai's other band) released a bunch of new songs over the last month or so—check those out if you like good music.

flyer by kai.

speaking of good music: willa is also putting on a killer fest in kitchener this september. we're not playing, but we will certainly be in attendance. if you're local to toronto, consider catching the train up for a crazy bill. congratulations alone is more than worth it.

that's all for now. we're still working on new music... you'll hear about it whenever we're ready.

a couple of shows to announce. firstly—we're playing a crazy pre-show for new friends fest this year.

flyer by kai.

the caution children are a bucket list band for us. they are your favourite band's favourite band. do not miss this.

secondly—a benefit for trans people taking place in kw. the venue has been changed; we'll update here once we know where to.

flyer by willa.

updated summer schedule:

  • june 28th @ t.b.a. (kitchener) w/ body nest, human form, sullen, gutmachine & one more lane (7 p.m./all ages/$20/p.w.y.c.)

  • august 19th @ the study room (kitchener) (details t.b.a.)

some other important news: our dear friend jazz has officially joined the band on second guitar. we played our last 2 shows with her and we already sound 10 times better. <3

her & kai have also started a new band (zuzu bailey). they're playing their first show tomorrow opening for i.o from b.c. at dystopia. try & catch it if you're around.

that's it for now. keep fighting for what's right.

that's all for now. free palestine, fight for trans liberation, and fuck anyone else who says otherwise.

spring + summer show schedule (so far).

thanks to everyone who came to our last pair of shows—gear still exploded but we pressed on as usual. i believe we raised around $400 at lowther for palestinian youth movement's toronto chapter, and saoirse dream ruled. this world is cursed, but life ain't so bad sometimes.

sixninehaus videos + merch + respire release show.

thank you to everyone who came by the house this weekend; that night was magic and we won't ever forget it. it means a lot to us to be surrounded by such a supportive community. we'll put up photos whenever we get 'em.

faith got videos of every set if you couldn't make it down:

the EP's been out for a couple of days and folks have been very sweet about it—thank you so much. we're trying to keep the momentum going... hopefully we'll have more out before the year is over.

our best buddies in treehouse of horror released their own EP the day after we did. we knew they were gonna blow us out of the fucking water, so we went first on purpose... can't see anything else usurping it as the best 7" of the year. show them some love and check it out below:

we also put some new shirts up for sale that were supposed to last us the next several months, but most of 'em got claimed within the first 24 hours—thank you thank you thank you. we've got a handful left of both perfect blue colourways (S–L), an incoming re-stock of the scott pilgrim design since that's just about sold out (literally just 3 2XLs left), and a new one we're picking up this week. we don't have good photos yet, but they look like this:

NFF will be our last local set 'til the end of september. respire asked us to play their record release show/tour homecoming at st. stephen's (déjà vu) and we're very excited about it—kai attended their very first gig at thigh high clubhouse many moons ago (r.i.p.), making this yet another full-circle moment for us as local freaks. tickets are live and you can snag 'em here; we hope to see you there.

flyer by egin.

lastly, we've got a new song on Feel Like We Feel, a cassette-only compilation that kai & ryan put together for NFF this year. pre-orders are up now on the NFDIY website—find those here if you so desire.

'til next time... <3

7" release show.

flyer by kai.

that took a lot longer to put together than we thought it would.

we won't actually have 7"s in hand until fest next month but we're pretty sure we'll have shirts in time for saturday if you're so inclined. we're stoked as hell. some ground rules to keep in mind:

  • sixninehaus is a home first and a venue second. everything will be taking place in the backyard—we're lucky to have been granted the space by the people who live there, so be respectful and don't be a jerk (or we'll boot you out pretty much immediately).
  • do not fuck around in the actual house.
  • don't crowd around out front.
  • be nice to the neighbours.
  • b.y.o.b. & don't use alone.

show starts at 8 sharp—there's not much space so don't be late. we have a curfew of 11 and there will be a secret set from some friends of ours who also have a record coming out this weekend (you can probably guess who).

bailed show + next gigs.

a couple of notes: toast is real sick which means we can't play the tranzac tonight (even though we made a cute alternate flyer for it) :~( kai & faith will still be there to help with doors & commemorate the end of a.p.d.—please consider attending.

alternate flyer by kai.

we do, however, have another gig added to our june schedule—an all ages matinée at the flat top on june 22nd with wolf fang fist & be still. flyer soon! it's gonna be a ripper.

separately, check out this cute graphic that got made for our NFF spotlight post + the accompanying bio:

"Conceived in Mississauga, based in downtown Toronto & formed at a North York house party in 2021, boxcutter specializes in scorching post-hardcore designed to melt through the harshest of Ontario winters. Following the city’s last generation of MySpace users in a world before streaming services were ubiquitous, the band’s DIY ethic & relentless schedule has already seen them play throughout the golden horseshoe with many of the genre’s best, supporting a clutch of cassette & vinyl releases with barely a year under their belt. Simultaneously mourning and basking in the remnants of the GTA’s now-bygone era, boxcutter picks up the pieces with passionate, frenetic screamo that dares to dream of a better world."

lastly—we have a 7" coming out some time next month. keep an eye out.

kingston + next show this weekend + june shows.

some updates: we just played with frail body in kingston and it bears repeating that they're arguably the best band in the world right now. please see them if they come through your town (no matter what else you've got going on that night) because we can promise that you'll never regret it. thanks to them for being game to do it in the first place & mikey for putting the whole thing on; sometimes cold e-mailing a tour manager actually works!

thanks to willa for driving us around so much (<3 <3 <3) & emma for putting up with our incessant yapping. here's a few videos filmed by faith of everyone that played (except us):

dudes rock.

our next order of business: kai booked a show at saint stephen-in-the-fields (that church in kensington with the jumpscare statue outside the front entrance) for this weekend—3 days from now to be exact. it'll be the first punk show that's ever been hosted there to our knowledge (or at least the first in a long time), and we'll be inaugurating the space alongside angel apricot & we could go on tour (their first show). we'll all be donating a portion of what we make, likely in support of the ongoing encampment at u of t. thanks to louis & everyone at the church for helping make this happen, and watch out for more very soon (including something we've already got in the pipeline down below)...

finally: an actual flyer for The Toast Show.

flyer by kai.

here's our updated schedule:
  • may 18th @ church of saint stephen-in-the-fields w/ angel apricot & we could go on tour ($12 or p.w.y.c./all ages/dry show)
  • june 8th @ tranzac club w/ a perennial daydream (last show), treehouse of horror, guest room status & blosum ($20 or p.w.y.c./all ages)
  • june 15th @ church of saint stephen-in-the-fields w/ terry green, purity culture & cloudwatch ($15 or p.w.y.c./all ages/dry show)—formal announcement coming soon
  • june 24th @ houndstooth (a.k.a. the toast show) w/ gutmachine & xxemoboyskissingxx (p.w.y.c./19+)
  • august 3rd @ lithuanian house (new friends fest) w/ raein, newfound interest in connecticut, awakebutstillinbed, we were skeletons, blind girls, dowsing, radura, glassing, short fictions, tyler daniel bean & emma goldman ($60.81 for day pass or $144.78 for weekend pass/all ages)
    • i hear there's still some discounted locals-only passes available at emissions for anyone in town that's tryna save a couple bucks.

that should be everything for now.

spring shows + r.i.p. bar orwell.

we've been busy hibernating (see: slacking) after our march weekender, but we're still gonna write that post about it eventually. a lot's happened since then...

we played with picknumberthreemylord! (who came all the way up from rochester), pretty mouth (subbing in for be still) & linens @ the arcade a few weeks ago. it ruled!

flyer by kai & treehouse ryan.

we've got a handful of shows waiting in the wings for may + june:

  • may 13th @ next church sanctuary (kingston) w/ frail body, treehouse of horror & pity the heel ($15 or p.w.y.c./all ages)
  • june 8th @ tranzac club w/ a perennial daydream (last show), treehouse of horror, guest room status & blosum ($20 or p.w.y.c./all ages)
  • june 15th w/ terry green, purity culture & cloudwatch (tkaronto—details t.b.a.)
  • june 24th @ houndstooth (a.k.a. the toast show) w/ gutmachine & xxemoboyskissingxx (p.w.y.c./19+)

flyer by kai.
flyer by willa coward.

in worse news, we also got word a few weeks back that bar orwell has seemingly closed for good after only a few years; fuck every landlord & property owner that obstructs what little culture we have left to hold onto in this city. some of our favourite shows as a band and as attendees have been there, and we'll miss their contribution to independent music. it's getting dire finding good venues around here but
in the face of it all, we have to march on...

here's a video clip of our first show there and our third show as a band. we'll miss it dearly.

and one last thing—riotnine forever.

overdue tour diary w/ treehouse of horror.

i hope everyone got some rest this past week.

of course, as you may know, christmas was cancelled this year in bethlehem—there is no rest when it comes to resisting occupation, and there is no cause for celebration in the midst of a genocide. from the river to the fucking sea: free palestine, now and forever.

art by michael deforge.

that being said: thanks to everyone who came and saw us at orwell a few weeks ago, sincerely. i don't have the hard number yet but i'm pretty sure we raised upwards of $1,200 for the personal care banks. there was a bootleg tape made for the gig featuring every band on the bill (except for not-so-secret low-key guests nanette) including 2 brand new terry songs that you can still grab here; all proceeds go towards the personal care bank.

j-card for the bootleg tape.

we also finally got around to finishing up the tour tape re-press; it's got a new cover printed via risograph (as usual) that we think is super cute. get one of those on our bandcamp or via maraming records and they'll be shipped out once i'm back from philippines in about a week. we only made 30 and we've already sold most of them, so perhaps don't wait if you're feeling it—treehouse's side is killer and we're probably not pressing this again.

re-press j-card.
fixed a typo from the last version of this insert only to make a new one...

another month has passed us by since our last post, and we still haven't written that belated tour yarn about our october shows w/ treehouse + a million photos by kai... we've got that down below.

also: it's faith's birthday today!!!
happy birthday faith!!!!!!!!!! <3 <3 <3

TOAST:

this one was a roller coaster. before we even got there, we were taking massive damage over time from struggling to print the j-cards and labels for all the cassettes, and then driving on the 401 for 6 hours straight. first stop turbo haüs in montréal:

KAI:

our first time to driving to kingston with a car that works (it's a rental, don't get too excited). just like it did in july, playing the church rules and i wish we had something like it in toronto. trying to build a scene from literally the ground up is no small feat and no static is legitimately doing god's by trying. thanks to mikey + company for setting everything up and being the best pals.

this was maybe the craziest show we've done at home so far (maybe usurped by the one we just did)—orwell on a perfect night is getting very hard to top as far as live music goes in the city rn. the energy in that room was unbelievable and every band fucking crushed it. thanks to everyone that pitted all night, 1000xgn for coming all the way from st. catharines (peep their new EP, featuring one of my favourite songs of the year), cüm cåuldrøn (now known as tachyon) for being the sweetest ever, treehouse for being the best, and everyone that came out and fucked with us even a little bit.
