pre-fest.

holy fuck what a wild few days it's been.

kai filled in for policeman at the officially unofficial pre-show they co-booked for dogs with hobbies on thursday. aeryn got sick and this place is actually the worst had to drop, meaning massa nera's surprise set was down a member. andrew stepped up to do a solo set (that ruled) at our behest instead, but not before we volunteered to fill in if the other bands were feeling it. we settled on doing both sets, but also keeping the secret 2-song set (from an as-of-yet untitled band) that immediately followed early heaven. kai forgot to tell the bar any of this, who signed up for 4 bands done before 11, and then we went 15 minutes past that. now they're reaaaaally mad at us. sorry! faith's bass went missing by the end of the night too, 'cause fuck us, i guess! there was a block-wide power outage this afternoon that took out the entirety of the lithuanian house for a while, which knocked back every set by a half hour. we were skeletons had to drop fest (also due to illness) and we are fucking gutted. indisposed dropped too because nothing can ever be easy. in traditional fashion for us, we have been faced with another set of obstacles to overcome—we will once again test our resilience.

we open for raein in 12 hours. see you there.

boxxy @ the killroom.

busy weekend!

us after finishing our set.

in addition to playing hamilton on sunday, i (kai) also made the trek to catch massa nera & this place is actually the worst in kitchener (alone) & toronto (with toast) the 2 days preceding. willa of a perennial daydream was kind enough to put me up for the night after the study room show, which made life a lot easier since i'd made zero plans regarding how i was gonna get home that night (thank yooooouuuuu)!

mark from massa showed me & willa this ja rule/metallica song...

after crashing on the couch, followed by spending an inordinate amount of time between mcdonald's & several modes of public transportation, i met up with toast & everyone else at orwell for round 2. the energy was incredible—i really feel like orwell is becoming the place to be for a guaranteed great show of passionate music. treehouse of horror & terry green played amazing sets that we'll upload photos of once we get the film back; watch out for new material from both of them this year.

right before our weekend started, the divorcemobile broke down again, so farah agreed to drive us up (thank you farah). toast (with help from t) cooked a bunch of mac & cheese for all the bands that we brought over in a comically large pot. things went well.

neck @ the killroom.
boxxy's fwendz!

neck was cool, cease ruled so hard that they played their entire set twice, t.p.i.a.t.w. made all of us wanna write math-y riffs & massa nera were as impossibly tight as ever (photos coming soon for these sets, too). the killroom rocks & we can't wait to come back! shout out to no funeral for making it happen & massa + andrew for being so cool to us. personally, this marked the 12th time i've gotten to see massa in the span of about 5 years & they seem to only get better every time, which is no small feat to say the absolute least. catch their battle set with quiet fear at new friends fest in august if you know what's good for you!!!

some last housekeeping notes:
  • our next gig: april 28th, 7 p.m. w/ swimming (NL), growing fins & please don't crash @ the arcade (ask a punk), all ages, $15/n.o.t.a.f.l.o.f.
  • we'll have another re-press of it's more like embracing with us by then; we sold the first 10 copies at the killroom with no insert & xerox'd covers, but the rest of the edition will come with all the extra bells & whistles.
  • we're out of shirts (kinda)! we have 10 or so left, but we're taking them off of bandcamp. new designs coming sooner than you think.
  • lastly: we're working on putting something together for either late may or early june, but we're not sure of the details yet. we'll post about it if we figure it out.

catch y'all on the flip... xoxoxo <3

april 28th @ the arcade.

we've been so caught up with shows, recording plans & the NFF announcement that we haven't even announced next month's gig yet: we'll be playing with please don't crash & growing fins (again ^_^) @ the arcade next month to support swimming!

flyer by ryan ulc.

after having to cancel the bulk of their tour last year mid-run due to a freak injury, they'll finally be visiting all the way from st. john's (!!!), so come out and give them some love.

flyer by kai.

until then, our next gig is still with massa nera in hamilton in a couple of weeks! here's an alternate flyer that kai made as per usual.

although we're still riding high on (mostly) wrapping up our recording session, ryan's come down with COVID, so we're all stuck at home for at least a few days while we run tests—thankfully, all of us appear to be negative so far (edit: looks like we spoke too soon). this isn't the first time that we've run into COVID while recording, so here's hoping we can buck that trend the next time around. be safe & take care of yourselves out there: this pandemic is still raging on, despite what our governments want us to believe.

april 9th @ the killroom.

some sad news: for reasons out of their control (fuck borders), the holy ghost tabernacle choir are unable to make it into canada next month, which means no more toronto date for us to play on april 11th. :~(

however, we have some amazing news to make up for it: we're playing with the almighty MASSA NERA in hamilton on april 9th instead!!!

flyer by nate.

we'll be accompanied by cease (members of stay down), neck, and this place is actually the worst (featuring aeryn from massa nera) @ the killroom (ask a punk, but maybe not us, since we don't know where it is yet either). this show will cap off their 3-day run in ontario following shows in kitchener and toronto (not to mention a montréal date in a little over a week), so you have plenty of opportunities to catch the best band in screamo as they pass through the province. to say we're stoked is an understatement!

in the meantime, our show at bar orwell later this month is creeping up quick! here's a flyer kai made in a couple of colourways. this will likely be the last time growing fins plays for a while as they (allegedly) gear up for recording, so definitely don't miss this if you can manage it!

lastly: we'll also be recording later this month for a top-secret project involving a bunch of friends... more will be revealed in due time. see y'all soon! <3
